Chapter 11 - Education - ONE

As I stood in the final debriefing meeting for one of our larger Hero Holiday®
humanitarian trips recently, I was astounded by the words that I heard from
our lead doctor for the project. In the presence of the group of students
and adults, the doctor declared, “you will save more lives by building
schools than you will ever save by building clinics.” Those words still resonate
in my heart. Providing an opportunity for education provides a greater
opportunity for survival.
A little while ago I interviewed a gentleman in Dominican Republic who
had helped us build a school in a poor village. I asked him what he thought
about various countries in the Western World having a teen drop out rate
as high as 20%. He asked me to repeat the question because he thought he
had misunderstood me. I repeated the question and his face dropped. “You
mean they are allowed to go to school and do not?”
Education may not be available to all, but it is the basic building block to a
better life. A basic education gives an individual the ability to minimize the
effects of other atrocities in their world.
The children of mothers who have a primary
education are 50% more likely to reach the
age of five.
