Chapter 10 - Corruption - ONE

Corruption has many faces and they are not all political.
The following story is an example of how corrupt religious
practices can lead desperate people to do desperate things.
Cape Town, South Africa, is reputed to be the most beautiful city in the world. However, the
following report is from a part of town you won’t see on your bus tour. (If you are squeamish,
you may want to skip over this story.)
In the late 1990’s, a high-ranking South African witch doctor made a public announcement
that having sex with a virgin will cure HIV and AIDS. In a study in 2000, it was shown that 58
children were raped or victims of attempted rape every day. Over 15 percent of all South
African rapes occur against children under the age of 11. That is about seven primary schoolaged
children each day. But some aren’t even old enough for kindergarten. They haven’t
even learned to talk:
In 2001, a nine-month-old baby girl who survived a gang rape underwent a full hysterectomy
and will require further surgery to repair intestinal damage. The baby was left unattended by
her 16-year-old mother when six men allegedly raped her. The six men, aged between 22 and
66, appeared in court on charges of rape and indecent assault.
Later that year, a month-old baby girl was raped, allegedly by her uncles. A police
spokesperson said the mother of the child had left the baby in the care of the men when
she went to visit her mother-in-law. Upon her return, she found the baby crying and as she
lifted her, she saw blood on her bottom. She then took the baby to a clinic where she was
told the girl had been raped and sustained vaginal damage.
